Self Care

Introduction

Self care. What is it? We hear it and assume we know what it means and especially with how its portrayed in the media, they show us facials and massages in fancy spas and being able to put down everything and relax with your family at the drop of a dime and putting away ongoing responsibilities for a day but in reality, yes those play a part if you can do it but that’s not all it is and not everyone is in a space to do it. Self care is all of the things that you do that keeps you mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy. No matter how small the action it still counts, it’s just about finding what you need and enjoy doing.

Did you know, we use self care in our everyday lives? Whether that be listening to a song that brightens your mood, talking to your friend, going for a walk in your community, seeing a doctor, and even brushing your teeth it’s all self care!

Here are some different ways we can practice self care:

  • Drinking water

It’s important to keep yourself hydrated.

  • Getting enough rest

Improves your brain function, your mood, and also your overall health.

  • Take technology/social media breaks

Negativity is always being broadcasted and constantly looking at them can also impact your mood/behaviour.

  • It is absolutely ok to say no

Say no to anything that puts stress on you or increases how much pressure you feel in your mind and body.

  • Washing your face or taking a bath

Can make you feel refreshed and ready to start the day but also gets rid of the dirt and oil that get stuck throughout the day.

  • Watching your favourite movie or tv show

It can make you happy to watch your comfort show or movie.

  • Reading a book

Can be a way to keep yourself grounded and a way to lower stress.

  • Meditating

Helps to keep you calm and improve your mindfulness/awareness.

  • Silence

Allows you to take in how you’re feeling instead of holding it in and internalizing your emotions.
