Self-sabotage also referred to as self destructive behaviour is the continuous act of doing something that prevents you or blocks you from your own success, progress, and goals. It can affect many areas of your life such as your work, your relationships, your health, and/or your personal development.

Recognizable Patterns of Self-Defeating Actions

Some common forms of self-sabotage include:

  • Procrastination: Delaying tasks or decisions, even when you know they are important.
  • Perfectionism: Setting unrealistic high standards that make it difficult to start and/or complete tasks.
  • Negative Self-Talk: Internal dialogue that undermines your confidence, like thinking, “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good enough.”
  • Avoidance: Steering clear of situations or opportunities that could lead to success because of fear of failure or discomfort.
  • Self-Medication: Using things like alcohol, drugs, or even food as a way to cope with stress and/or negative emotions.
  • Overcommitting: Taking on too many responsibilities, making it impossible to excel in any one area, thereby setting yourself up for failure.
  • Undervaluing Yourself: Rejecting praise or opportunities because you feel undeserving.

Some Effective Techniques For Breaking The Cycle of Self-Sabotage

  • Identify your self-sabotaging behaviors: Once you know what they are, you can start to change them.
  • Challenge your negative thoughts: Turn your mindset around and replace it with positive thoughts.
  • Set realistic goals: Don’t try to do too much that you can’t handle at once.
  • Break down large tasks into smaller ones: This will help to make them feel less intimidating.
  • Reward yourself for your accomplishments: No matter how big or small, this will help you stay motivated.
  • Seek professional help if needed: A therapist can help you understand and how you can overcome self-sabotaging behaviors.

Self-Limiting Beliefs

Self-limiting beliefs are self-critical thoughts and presumptions the we have about ones self and ones abilities. These beliefs play the role as mental barriers, that stop you from achieving your full potential and progress. It usually stems from past experiences, how you were raised, and/or societal influences which as a result can heavily impact personal growth, careers, relationships, and/or overall wellbeing negatively.

Typical Self-Limiting Patterns Include:

  • “I’m not good enough.” – This belief can prevent you from pursuing opportunities or taking risks because you doubt your abilities and worth.
  • “I don’t deserve success or happiness.” – Often stemming from low self-esteem or past failures, this belief can lead to self-sabotaging behaviors.
  • “It’s too late for me to change or try something new.” – The idea that age or past choices have permanently limited your options can stop you from exploring new opportunities or career paths.
  • “I always fail when I try something new.” – A fear of failure can lead to avoiding new experiences, resulting in stagnation and missed opportunities.

 What Strategies Can Help Me Overcome Self-Doubt?

  • Identify Your Beliefs: Pay attention to the negative thoughts you have about yourself. Write them down to make them explicit and easier to confront.
  • Challenge Your Beliefs: Question the validity of these beliefs. Are they based on facts, or are they assumptions? What evidence do you have to support or refute them?
  • Reframe Your Thoughts: Replace negative beliefs with more empowering, realistic ones. For example, change “I’m not good at this” to “I can learn and improve with practice.”
  • Seek Evidence of Success: Look for instances where you’ve succeeded or demonstrated competence. This helps to counteract negative self-perceptions.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself and recognize that everyone has self-doubts. It’s a normal part of the human experience
